The opportunity to teach and share is the most unexpected joy that I’ve derived from photography. Spending time with photographers who want to learn and grow as image-makers is deeply rewarding and compelling. Workshop days often run from 8am to midnight, and yet I rarely feel more energized than when I see the spark of recognition in someone’s eye that something suddenly makes sense. When I see a photographer suddenly imagining how they want to use their new knowledge in their own photography, it’s a moment that’s incredibly gratifying.
I’ve been a part of keynotes, workshops, and seminars that include the Summit Series Workshops, Popular Photography Mentor Series, WPPI, Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar, UPAA Symposium, The Consumer Electronics Show, Nikon School and World in Focus.
Iconic photographer and educator, Rich Clarkson, first invited me to teach at his Summit Series Workshops in 2000, and ever since I have been a faculty member each year at both the Lighting Workshop and Sports Photography Workshop. Over that time, I’ve developed presentations and course materials to help photographers learn about lighting, business, and the emotional side of being a photographer.
My keynote presentation, Souvenirs of Light—a blend of images and carefully-crafted words—consistently receives a strong and passionate response at workshops around the country. The presentation has been called a “game-changer” by Brad Smith, the former Director of Photography of Sports Illustrated. My business presentation, Phone Call to Published Pictures, is also very popular among photographers and faculty alike and has been considered by Clarkson to be, “One of the the most important presentations for photographers to see.”
